I can only imagine the way autism acerbates this.

For instance, I'm sitting in my stretchy comfy sweatpants just like I do all through the winter even though it's a smoldering 90 degrees outside. Why? Because its comfy and I don't like change!

By the way, I haven't been here to comment earlier because this site nearly crashes my computer. This particular post took ten minutes and two tries to get loaded. One day maybe we'll upgrade from our steam engine powered, antiquated computer.elasticwaistbandladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12643871078268503643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-74500539091314677072007-07-08T16:30:00.000-07:002007-07-08T16:30:00.000-07:00Gotta love it- talk to the hand.Yes, "Alternative ...Gotta love it- talk to the hand.

Yes, "Alternative Communication User" may be a good label for us to coin.

"My kid's not disabled. Every deer/elk/cow crossing sign was announced, "A cow/elk/deer will be crossing the road for the next 10 miles!"
No meltdowns in 5 days of just driving, just 2 tantrums. And no meltdowns or tantrums where we stayed for vacation either.
My son is the I Spy fanatic of all time. He learned it in school and it goes on forever. He enjoys it most when we are standing around outside, like waiting for the school bus.HortenseDaglehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05327263771676100899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-21459006135307066262007-07-08T12:37:00.000-07:002007-07-08T12:37:00.000-07:00I need to perfect the "stop" hand signal in front ...I need to perfect the "stop" hand signal in front of people's faces who want discussion and explanation from my writhing Aspie.

Perhaps I should accompany it with a swift kick in the shins?Haddayrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02538105167989517633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-50679397019621551352007-07-08T09:02:00.000-07:002007-07-08T09:02:00.000-07:00That's too bad about the meltdown - but the fact t...That's too bad about the meltdown - but the fact that he was able to process that information from the sign is pretty awesome... :)
My Little Bug doesn't have too many traveling issues... unless you count motion sickness. :PMelissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14908930035466483151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-76278668610308839722007-07-08T03:33:00.000-07:002007-07-08T03:33:00.000-07:00Ed = East... geez :)Ed = East... geez :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-20786898408989699562007-07-08T03:32:00.000-07:002007-07-08T03:32:00.000-07:00We are going on a road trip today. Meltdowns/anxiety attacks (mild I hope) are anticipated and he's getting a map to hopefully help prevent them.

Anxiety is exhausting for little ones (my eldest suffers from it)... I don't think most people realize just how exhausting.

MofM - learning disabled is used IMO when nobody attempts to discover a means of communication with someone that may not use spoken language as first choice. There's nothing "disabled" about either boy of mine... once communication was established... both are very, very smart.

S.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37025305.post-74812485298391179452007-07-08T01:42:00.000-07:002007-07-08T01:42:00.000-07:00We lived in Berkshire in England for a number of y...We lived in Berkshire in England for a number of years in the 80's and my older children were extremely disappointed that even though they constantly saw BEWARE signs for deer(on the M4)and foxes and hedgehogs crossing they never actually saw any.
The NO MOTOR VEHICLES SIGN is the one that used to delight them most. A car with a motorbike above, it looks more as if it means NO LOW FLYING MOTORBIKES.
I think that the LABEL Learning disabled is wrong when it comes to children with autism.Your son was able to analyse the information that he saw and able to come to a conclusion to a much greater level than normally developing children. It is also so wrong to say that individuals with autism lack imagination, yours son's ability to imagine consequences seems perfect to me.
Despite the rain,I hope you enjoyed you holiday with your family.MOTHER OF MANYhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02555514242369474271noreply@blogger.com
